Autumn Lawn Care - Top Tips to Healthy Grass
So, we’ve covered how to water your lawn, now it’s time to learn how to care for your lawn this Autumn. This is prime preparation time to get your lawn as healthy as can be before Winter. We all know how tough Winter can be on our precious lawns, but with the right prep, you can be sure that come Spring, your grass will be good as new.
One of the most important things you need to do to make sure your lawn survives the winter is for it to be SUPER healthy...I’m talking - runs 10km a day and has never touched a chocolate bar kind of healthy. Autumn is the perfect time to get rid of those weeds, give it plenty of water and sun, and feed it some extra nutrients to get it through it’s dormancy. Here’s 3 simple tips to help you prep this Autumn.
Tip #1 - Eradicate those WEEDS!
Get them OUTTA HERE! They’ve hung around too long and now that Summer is reaching it’s end, their time is up. Before you go wasting precious money on feeding weeds just to kill them later, start with getting rid of them first. Depending on your lawn size, you can either pull them out by hand, or use a selective herbicide (weed killer spray). Quick tip - selective herbicides will kill their intended target outlined on the bottle...non-selective kills almost everything it touches.
If you’ve opted to spray your weeds, there’s a few rules you need to follow.
- Mow no less than 7 days before spraying
- Make sure you mix to the correct ratio in the instructions
- Spray when there is minimal wind to avoid killing other plants
- Do NOT water after spraying, give 12-24 hours for the chemical to soak in
- Do NOT mow within 7 days of spraying, you’ll ruin all your hard work
Be prepared for it to take a good 14 days to really see results. Don’t give up too quickly. Shop weed sprayers
Tip #2 - FEED IT!
Your soil can only do so much on it’s own. Fertilising a few times a year is a good start to ensuring your grass is at it’s best. Sure, if you need some quick green grass, CK88 will do the trick just fine, but to prep for winter, we are after a good slow release fertiliser. Using fertiliser like Organic Booster lets your lawn slowly soak in the mineral goodness and aerates your soil as it goes. It also won’t burn your plants or lawn if you happen to be a lil’ heavy handed, like yours truly. Even better news - you can use it on plants as well. No need to buy multiple different types of fertiliser. This guy is the jack-of-all-trades. In saying that - every now and again you should change up the kind of fertiliser you use to give your soil a rainbow of nutrients.
Tip #3 - Mow with a catcher or rake!
I know, I know. What a pain. Do I have tooooo? Unfortunately, yes. Coming into the cooler months, the days get much shorter which means way less time for the sunlight to reach your grass and soil. That added layer of “mulch” you usually leave behind is another layer that the sun has to get through to reach your lawn...notttt helpful. Same goes for fallen leaves. It’s painful I know, but trust me, your lawn will thank you. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but come end of winter, it will be so pretty and make it all worthwhile. Shop rakes here
